CEO of EnterpriseDB, Ed Boyajian, graciously took time from his busy schedule for an interview with DSA while he was in Singapore to visit customers and partners before he’s scheduled to attend and speak at the EnterpriseDB Summit 2017 in Tokyo.

EnterpriseDB is a worldwide provider of enterprise-class products and services based on PostgreSQL, helping companies reduce costs on database license fees, maintenance fees and vendor lock-in. The company has seen continued acceleration and adoption of its solutions over the years and recently recorded its 29^th consecutive quarters of subscription revenue growth.

According to Ed, the international market, especially the South East Asian market and APJ has certainly become an integral part of their business plans. It was the fastest growing market for EnterpriseDB in 2016 and they will continue to invest in the region whilst relying on a network of close partners to help bring their products to market.

The EDB Postgres Platform is the first integrated open source-based database management platform that brings together all the components required for managing structured and unstructured data in a single platform.
Most recently, EnterpriseDB announced a collaboration with Red Hat to accelerate access to the EDB Postgres Platform on Red Hat’s OpenShift Container Application Platform, allowing new DevOps efficiencies for flexible database deployments.

EnterpriseDB’s open source product offerings are designed to support every class of applications within an organisation, from mission critical applications all the way to new apps that are in development.  Ed sees four primary patterns in terms of the adoption of their products, which are used for legacy database replacement, new application development, application modernisation initiatives as well in fast moving areas that require a more flexible and open environment.

An innovative feature called Foreign Data Wrappers (FDW) enables Postgres databases to link with other data stores. It also allows users to access and manipulate the data as if it were part of a native Postgres table. For example, users can use an FDW for MongoDB to query data from the document database they deployed and join with data from a local Postgres table using SQL. They’re able to view, sort and group that data as rows and columns, or as JSON documents. They can even write (insert, update or delete) data directly in the source document database from Postgres, as if it were one seamless deployment.

As most of their customers operate in a hybrid cloud environment, in 2016 EnterpriseDB launched EDB Ark, a Database-as-a-Service (DBaaS) for hybrid cloud deployments of Postgres to private and public clouds such as Red Hat OpenStack, Amazon Web Services (AWS), and other deployment platforms.

EDB Ark simplifies the process of provisioning robust Postgres deployments, while taking advantage of the benefits of cloud computing. When used with EDB Postgres Advanced Server, EDB Ark also provides compatibility with Oracle, offering dramatic cost savings and competitive advantages.

EnterpriseDB is dedicated to helping enterprises on their digitisation journey. They see it as a “digital race” and it’s still not too late to win even for digital latecomers.
