Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) promises to help organizations cut back on IT costs and empower employee mobility through cloud technology. Ian Song, Research Manager, Client Devices at IDC, wrote that VDI has experienced rapid growth in the first part of 2013, owing to both the rise of enterprise mobility and the end of life for Windows XP.
Philippine telco giant PLDT is launching a cloud-based virtual desktop solution courtesy of VMware technology. Labelled Desktop as a Service (DaaS), the new offering is aimed at enterprises wishing to deploy virtual desktops across the organization.
To be marketed through its corporate business group PLDT ALPHA Enterprise, the DaaS offering will provide businesses easy access to their desktops over any device. An offline mode also lets users save any changes and updates on their virtual desktops that eventually syncs their progress once they connect online.
With companies often undergoing technology refresh or company-wide updates every three to five years, this necessity to stay updated often entails high costs. DaaS addresses costly IT operational costs by saving on time and expenses of setting up new hardware by outsourcing the infrastructure and maintenance to a trusted service provider.
“With the benefits of lowering operational costs and better security management among users, DaaS has increasingly gained more traction globally, including businesses in the Philippines. The inclusion of VMware-based virtual desktops in our enterprise solutions portfolio fits our aim of truly becoming the end-to-end expert ICT partner of our corporate customers,” said Jovy Hernandez, PLDT FVP & Head of PLDT ALPHA Enterprise.
